In Venice the foreigners are unlikely to experience serious health problems, thought the climate, generally enjoyable, can sometimes present unpleasant surprises. The summer temperature can be 30-32C and more, and combined with high humidity this accounts for rather a stifling atmosphere. The people, who are not used to high temperatures, should be careful not to get a heat strike. Another problem is sudden rain shower or cold in the evening. It is recommended to contact the doctor immediately in case of any health problems, and not to take any medicine without prescription.

General emergency can be called from any phone booth, 112 (common for all EU countries) or 113, local ambulance. Other emergency numbers:  police – 112, fire – 115.

There are emergency and accident departments in all Venice hospitals, the largest of them Campo SS Giovanni e Paolo, Scuola Grande di San Marco, Ospedale Civile. 

Pharmacists (farmacia) are qualified to give advice on minor ailments and to dispense prescriptions. There will always be a 24-hour one 'on turn'. The region hosts some major hospitals, carrying out profound researches in various spheres of medical sciences. Modern hi-tech Venice-Mestre Hospital was recently opened, presenting the newest medical technologies. Venice hosted major international seminar of cardiovascular diseases, Venice ARrhythmias 2007, accepting scientists from all over the world.
