Venice Italy Weather and When to Go
Venice is located in the zone of mild Mediterranean climate, with high humidity and temperatures, rarely falling below zero. The city’s position on the lagoon soothes climatic extremities. Annual precipitation amounts to 800-850 inches. Average summer temperature is about 30-32°C, with high evaporation it makes for rather sticky weather. The combination of heat haze and air pollution produces heavy mist, lingering over the city all day long. In July and August heat and humidity may cause strong thunderstorms. Sirocco blows from the south and is very hot. The weather is unstable and changes rapidly, but generally clear days prevail. Summer is probably the worst time to visit Venice, the weather can be rather tiresome.
In spring and autumn the weather is cool, clear, with moderate temperatures about 12-18°C. Rain showers can cause flooding, called “acqua alta”, when the water rises several centimeters over the quays. April to October is usually the busiest time in Venice, though it is a popular destination year round. The first half of winter sees heavy rainfall, with flooding most likely in November and December. The temperatures range between 0°C and 7°C, reaching below zero extremely rarely. In morning city and lagoon are enveloped with mist. Snow is very rare. Winter is the best time for traveling to Venice to avoid crowds and find better hotel rates.
